if you going to use it in the long term uh you are risking liver damage hello Dr here so uh is the supplement that you’re currently using could it be on the list of the supplements that I’m going to be talking about today because in today’s article I’m going to be sharing with you seven supplements that are toxic to your liver okay seven supplements that are toxic to your liver and uh one of the ones you’re using may just be on this list so uh be on the lookout uh so let’s just di straight in so it’s all about
Herbal Supplement 1: Cassia Cinnamon
now the first one is Casia Cinnamon Now the offending agent in Casia cinnamon is called kumarin okay so the Casia does contain compound called a kumarin and and this kumarin is quite toxic to the liver yes it is a liver Toxin and not just that it is a potential cinogen .
so it’s something that you really need to be careful about if you are uh using CIA and um I’ll say here that uh if you’re using very small amounts that’s okay that is that is you you’re safe uh but bear in mind that a teaspoon a day of cinamon can cause liver toxicity yes um just one teaspoon a day is enough to cause problems for your liver.
so as something to bear in mind okay you want to keep it really small now the advice is that you should use no more than 0.1 mgram per kilogram body weight per day of CIA cinam that amount is considered to be in the safe zone now if you want to be extra safe what you need to do then is actually to use the twin sister okay of cak which is seon cinnamon um
if you can get your hands on Salon cinnamon it is safer and it’s best you use that because uh the salon does not have the kumarin that the cat does have so um you know that’s a very nice ority for you there
Herbal Supplement 2: Panax Ginseng
and supplement number two that is toxic to liver is p ginen okay panas ginen now um panas ginen the reason it can cause problems for your liver is because uh it can inhibit the liver enzyme that is called cyp 4503 A4 um because this is one enzyme that helps us break down a lot of toxins a lot of medications that we use so if it is inhibited .
it’s going to interact with those medications and that will increase the toxicity of those medications so uh it’s like um you know ginen sort of Works hand in hand with some of those medications and examples of those medications will be startings okay so if you’re using panas ginen in combination with these medications.
here you know startings you are asking for trouble uh if you use panas ginen with imatin which is a medication that is used for blood cancers like leukemia you also asking for trouble for your liver another medication that doesn’t bod well with panas ginen uh is ratra is a medication that is used for HIV management so uh these medications
They Don’t Really pair well with panas ginsen if you’re using panas ginsen and you are on any of these uh you want to be careful because you’ll be asking for trouble for your liver now um even though panas gasen may be okay on his own high doses of panas gasen have been shown to cause direct damage to the liver.
okay so very high doses are not safe uh indeed um the threshold for damage has been estimated to be three grams or more okay three grams or more of panas ging is very toxic to your liver so even if you’re going to use it and you’re not using it in combination with any of these medications you also do not want to use very high doses because if you do you will be asking for trouble for your liver
Supplement 3: Kombucha Tea
so what a supplement number three that is toxic to the liver supplement number three uh that can cause problems for your liver is kombucha okay kombucha now I’ve done a video on this before and in that article you know I did talk about the reasons why I don’t use Kombucha tea and why I don’t advise it and is because of the toxicity to the liver the problem is that several cases of liver damage and even death have been reported from consumption of Kombucha tea so uh you want to be very careful um you know Kombucha tea is supposed to be uh a tea .
provides you with some probiotic however um it does have some issues and some risk factors have been identified as potential reasons why Kombucha Tea may cause problems for your liver and this risk factors will include someone having pre-existing medical conditions you you don’t want to use kombucha tea
if You’ got pre-existing medical conditions is best you stay away from Kombucha tea and also over consuming Kombucha Tea uh you will be asking for trouble for your liever as well because liver toxicity would just be around the corner these are some of the risk factors that have been identified in association with consuming kuch te and uh you know if any of this applies to you please is best you stay away from using Kombucha Tea
Supplement 4: Black Cohosh
how about we talk about supplement number four that can hurt your liver supplement number four that can cause problems for your liver is black cohos okay black cohos and this is a very sad one because this is One supplement that I have recommended to women before uh because we tend to use it for management of menopause but uh you know
it’s been found that black AOS can cause problems for the liver um you know ranging from know simple gundies to liver failure they have been reported uh you know with the use of black Coos so if you’re using it you also want to be very careful as well because toxicity to the liver could occur as a result of using black Co for uh menopause management
Supplement 5: Kava Kava
and now supplement number five that is harmful to your liver supplement number five that can cause problems for your liver is Cav cover okay Cav Cav and this is one that really touches me because I got to tell you this cover is one of the best anti-anxiety supplement out there honestly is very very good for anxiety but sadly it can cause problems for us uh for you know in our liver uh .
like I said before you know cover cover is very good for mood and anxiety um it regulates your mood it modulates your mood and it actually make anxiety melt away you know it’s it’s something that I highly recommend for anxiety however it is toxic to the liver. that’s the truth um because cases of hepatitis which is inflammation of the liver ending in liver failure have been reported uh with Cava Cava and some of those cases have required liver transplant and even death as well so uh this is something .
we want to be careful about uh using Cav cover uh even though it’s very nice for mood even though it’s very nice for anxiety regulation um we want to be very careful with it now the toxicity of Cav cover uh is such that it’s been banned in a lot of European countries um but it’s still allowed in the US uh because the FDA actually advises consumers to be aware of the potential risk of liver failure associated with Cava containing products so that is just the warning that the FDA puts out but in some European countries uh the cover cover has become a no no
Book Plug: Managing High Blood Pressure
so just before we continue a quick plug this is my book on managing high blood pressure with LIF approach links to get a book right below this very video
Supplement 6: Skullcap
so let’s talk about supplement number six that can hurt your liver supplement number six that can cause problems for a liver is scull cap okay scull cap and um this is another medication that is uh uh you know used to manage anxiety and stress and insomia and uh is particularly good for all of those conditions just like Cava Cava but the fact remains the same that it is toxic to the liver
but research has shown that the first three months of starting skull c cap uh those are the worst months where liver damage is more likely to occur so I suppose if you use cab Beyond three months then you could say you know that you’re tolerating it well in which case you may want to continue but you need to keep an eye on uh your liver function
Supplement 7: Niacin
and now let’s talk about supplement number seven that can hurt your liver supplement number seven that is toxic to the liver is niine okay niine Iyou know big farm medications that are toxic to the liver niine was on the list and I have included it here again because of course nine is also seen as a supplement like you want to be careful you know for the most part we tend to use nine to manage fatigue and some people have recommended nine for management of cholesterol and triglycerides to lower you know cholesterol and triglycerides .
that’s okay uh but we want to be careful with it because uh you know long-term use of nine has been shown to cause Li damage and and that’s a fact and my recommendation is that uh you know you should use nine only for shortterm purposes because uh if you go to use it in the long term uh you are risking liver damage and uh but research has also shown that that the liver damage is dose dependent so the
higher the dose of the nine you’re using uh the higher the likelihood that you’re going to run into problems with your liver and that’s the reason why I say that if anyone is going to use nin at all if you’re going to consider using it uh Beyond a short-term use uh go as low as possible as far as the dose is concerned so that is my advice regarding nine okay
Recommendations for Users
so now if your supplement is on this list uh what should you do well the most reasonable thing to do will be for you to stop using the supplements that’s that’s the reasonable thing to do um the other thing you can do is to look for Alternatives okay you look for Alternatives now um here’s the other thing if you feel that that uh you really cannot do without uh these supplements that Ive mentioned today um a safer thing to do will be uh for you to uh monitor your liver function.
your doctor should uh find it easy to do this you know you simply do what we call Li function test so you see your doctor and it’s just block test that you need to be taken regularly I would probably suggest about 3 to 4 months at regular intervals just to keep an eye on the Li function to make sure that your liver is not being U you know severely affected by any of these supplements that I talked about today that is if you must continue using it but like I said the most reasonable thing to do will be for you to stop using the supplements and to look for Alternatives
